Wednesday, 23 April 2014

Finance Minister AMA Muhith Tuesday urged the developed countries to bring changes in their trade policies to ensure duty free market access for least developed countries (LDCs), reports BSS.
"Developed nations need to bring changes in their trade policies for giving LDCs duty free market access," said the finance minister while speaking at a discussion at the United Nations General Assembly.
The discussion meeting styled "Giving the LDCs necessary assistance in the changing global situation" was jointly organised by Bangladesh and Norway.
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Dr AK Abdul Momen chaired the discussion.
Muhith urged the developed countries to come up with specific financial assistance plans for the development of the UN recognized 49 LDCs.
He said the developed nations must allocate 50 percent of their foreign aid for the LDCs as the lion portion of their national budgets come from foreign aid.
Highlighting various socio-economic successes of the present Bangladesh government, the finance minister said Bangladesh has been able to reduce its dependence on foreign aid significantly.
He said Bangladesh government is eager to allow setting up of the regional office of technology and research centre under the UN initiatives.
