Mujahid demands scrapping of local-body polls schedule

Tuesday, 24 June 2008

Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid repeated Monday his demand that the government scrap local-body polls schedule and hold national elections first, reports UNB.

He said it would be difficult for the caretaker administration to successfully hold any election keeping political parties out of the scene.

He brushed aside the statement by the LGRD adviser that local-body election is not a political affair and it should not be the headache of the political parties.

"It's impossible to successfully hold any voting without political parties, which truly represent the people," he told a news conference in the city.

Mr Mujahid said the country's major political parties have refused to accept the schedule for local-body polls.

Terming the decision 'deceitful' he said: "The government is showing negligence to the public opinion."

"People will never accept any staged election in the country," he said.

Mr Mujahid, a minister during the latest BNP-led coalition government, asked the government to immediately withdraw the state of emergency to restore fundamental rights.

He alleged that cases were being filed against innocent people and they were being kept in jail without trial under the state of emergency.

"They are also being deprived of bail in normal cases," he said.

He said Jamaat is conducting a nationwide signature campaign to mobilise public opinion for unconditional release of Jamaat Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other political detainees.

The campaign is also meant to create pressure on the government for national elections by October --- a demand the BNP-led four-party alliance is fighting for.

He came down heavily on the government for its failure to curb the prices of daily commodities and said the administration should not stay too much busy with politics rather than solving sufferings of the people.
