Mujibur, Shahidul, Swapan, Anwar emerge champions

Mujibur, Shahidul, Swapan and Anwar emerged champion in their respective age group in the first Masters Weightlifting Championship that concluded Friday at the National Sports Council (NSC) gymnasium in the city, reports UNB.
The day's group wise champion: age group 65 plus - Mujibur Rahman of Liberation War Sector-9 team lifted overall 85kg (snatch 35kg, clean & jerk 50kg); age group 55-65 - Shahidul Islam of Mymensingh DSA lifted overall 100kg (snatch 45kg, clean & jerk 55kg); age group 45-55 - Swapan Kumar Das of Kushtia Gymnastic Club lifted overall 152kg (snatch 65kg, clean & jerk 87kg); and age group 35-45 - Anwar Hossain of Dinajpuir DSA lifted overall 185kg (Snatch 85kg, Clean and Jerk 100kg).
Earlier, the 34th National Senior, 15th National Junior and 11th National Women's Weightlifting Championships concluded on Thursday at the same venue.
Ace lifter Bidyut Kumar Roy of Bangladesh Ansar announced his retirement from winning a silver medal in 105kg weight categories on Thursday, putting an end to a 27-year colourful career. He lifted a total of 240kg.
The 43-year-old weightlifter, who began his career in 1988, also with a silver medal, continued to win 26 gold medals over the years in different weight categories.
Bangladesh Army emerged champions in men's senior group while Bangladesh Ansar finished runners-up in the men's senior group with Hamidul Haque adjudged the best lifter.
In the men's junior group, Bagerhat DSA emerged champions and Rajshahi DSA became runners-up with Sheikh Naim Hossain named the best lifter in the group.
Mabia Akhter Simanta of Bangladesh Ansar and Rokeya Sultana Sathi of Bangladesh Army created new national mark in their respective weight categories of women's group.
Simanta made the record in snatch, clean & jerk of the 69 kg weight category, lifting 69 kgs in snatch and 93 kgs in clean and jerk while Sathi made new national mark in snatch of the 63 kg weigh category lifting 72 kgs.
Mollah Sabira, Zahura Khatun Reshma and Fahima Akhter Moyna set new national marks in their respective events on the 2nd day on Wednesday.
Molla Sabira created a new national mark in the 48 kgs weight category lifting overall 138 kg -- 66 kg in snatch and 78 kg in jerk.
Zahura Khatun Reshma made new record in 44 kg weight category lifting overall 121 kg -- 53 kg in snatch and 68 kg in jerk while Fahima Akhter Moyna set new record in the 58 kgs weight category lifting 92 kg in clean and jerk to better 8th Bangladesh Games record of 90 kgs.
The 4-day national weightlifting meet featured four tiers --34th National Senior, 15th National Junior, 11th National Women's and 1st National Masters (men's) -- organised by Bangladesh Weightlifting Federation.
Additional director of Walton (RB) FM Iqbal Bin Anwar distributed prizes among the winners as the chief guest at the concluding ceremony.
