\\\'Multiple trade unions bad for RMG\\\'

Saturday, 29 November 2014

There are 'too many' trade unions in Bangladesh’s export-focused readymade garment (RMG) industry. Multiple trade unions are not good for the garment industry, said State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu while addressing a programme in the city. He cautioned that too many trade union in RMG industry may hurt this sector. He said workers of all RMG factories wanted to form trade unions without being aware of the relevant laws. ‘I don’t understand what good so many trade unions will do. Cambodia’s garment sector suffered a huge blow for approving too many trade unions,’ Chunnu stated in presence of labour representatives from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and South Africa. Bangladesh last year amended the Labour Act providing, for the first time, the opportunities to form trade unions at RMG factories, according to a news agency.
