Murder accused in Phulgazi by-poll

An accused in a murder case has submitted his nomination papers for Phulgazi Upazila Parishad (UZ) by-election. The Upazila chairman’s post fell vacant after the murder of Ekramul Haque. Mahatab Uddin Ahmmed Chowdhury Minar, the prime suspect of the murder of Ekram, also a local Awami League leader, filed his nomination paper while undergoing treatment under jail custody. ‘Till Sunday, 10 candidates have submitted their nomination papers,’ Additional Deputy Commissioner of Feni district and District Returning Officer Md Enamul Haque has said. Apart from Minar, the Upazila unit AL general secretary Abdul Alim, Feni District AL member Sheikh Abdullah, Upazila AL’s organising secretary Harun Mazumder, AL leader Sirajul Islam Azad, Mujibul Haque, Mohammed Selim, BNP leader Golam Rasul Majumder Golap, Jamal Majumder, and Selina Bachchu are contending for the post. Feni District BNP organising secretary and Minar Chowdhury's lawyer Mesbah Uddin Khan said, ‘Minar's nephew Saifuddin Ahammed Chowdhury and his relative Zakir Hossain submitted the nomination paper on his behalf.’ The nomination papers will be scrutinised on Sep 3. The last date of withdrawing nomination is Sep 7, according to bdnews24.com.
