Around 200 voters could not provide necessary documents to prove themselves to be genuine and thus they will be automatically disqualified for voting in the Sunday's election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), its president Abdus Salam Murshedy told newsmen Friday. In an exchange of views meeting, Mr. Murshedy claimed contestants from Forum panel have been spreading wrong information about the voter list. "Actually the voter list has already been published. Some 748 voters against whom objections were given by both the panels of contestants were asked to provide necessary documents to prove their authenticity as owners of apparel factories. Those who could provide the same became automatically eligible for being voters and those who would not be able to provide those won't get the chance," he said. "With two panels' consent it has been decided that people who will be able to prove their authenticity even 15 minutes before the start of the election will be eligible for voting. So, there is no need to prepare a new voter list," Mr. Murshedy added. He said identity cards have already been issued to eligible voters. "The vote will be held on March 20. There is no reason for changing the date," Mr. Murshedy said. He said a panel is seeking to delay the election on the plea of their lack of preparation for voting. "There is no such example that any election is rescheduled for such a reason," he said further. "I urge both the panels to participate in the election for the interest of the sector," Mr. Murshedy said. The voters will have to elect 27 directors from Dhaka and Chittagong regions. Two panels -- Sammilita Parishad headed by present Vice President Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin) and Forum headed by former president Anwar-ul-Alam Parvej -- are contesting the election.
