Mushfiq tops Bangladesh's Test ton chart as Litton achieves rare feat
Tuesday, 19 May 2026
Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim etched his name deeper into Bangladesh cricket history by scoring his 14th Test century, reports BSS.
In doing so, he became the country's most prolific centurion in the longest format during the second Test against Pakistan at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today.
Mushfiqur reached the three-figure mark in emotional fashion after resuming on 90 following the tea break. The experienced right-hander had to wait 23 deliveries to complete the remaining 10 runs before steering pacer Mohammad Abbas past gully for a boundary to bring up his century off 178 balls.
As the milestone finally arrived, he celebrated passionately, raising both hands, dropping his bat, and embracing teammate Taijul Islam as Bangladesh players applauded from the dressing room. He then performed Sajdah, as he has done after each of his centuries.
The century carried special significance as it allowed Mushfiqur to move past Mominul Haque's tally of 13 Test hundreds for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh began the day under overcast skies with Mushfiqur and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto at the crease. Despite losing wickets at the other end throughout the day, Mushfiqur remained calm and anchored the innings.
He first negotiated a testing morning session alongside Shanto before building a crucial 123-run partnership off 186 balls with Litton Das, a stand that was instrumental in stretching Bangladesh's lead beyond 400.
After Litton's dismissal, Mushfiqur continued to frustrate Pakistan with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and later stitched together a 71-run stand with Taijul Islam.
Meanwhile, Litton Das narrowly missed a rare feat after falling for a fluent 69 in Bangladesh's second innings on Day 3 of the second Test against Pakistan in Sylhet on Monday.
Having scored a magnificent 126 in the first innings under severe pressure, Litton once again produced an elegant knock to put Bangladesh firmly in control of the match before being dismissed while attempting an attacking stroke against Hasan Ali.
The stylish right-hander looked set for his second century of the match and was batting with authority after overcoming the early challenge posed by Pakistan's bowlers. But his attempt to clear deep third man ended his innings on 69, denying him a place among a select group of Bangladeshi batters to score centuries in both innings of a Test.
Only Mominul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto have achieved that feat for Bangladesh.
Despite missing out on the landmark, Litton still entered another exclusive chapter in Bangladesh cricket history. The Sylhet Test marked the third occasion on which he scored both a century and a fifty in the same Test match as a wicketkeeper-batter, a record unmatched by any other Bangladeshi cricketer.
He first achieved the feat against Pakistan in Chattogram in 2021, when he made 114 and 59, before repeating it against Sri Lanka in Mirpur in 2022 with scores of 141 and 52.
