Mustard fields wear a captivating look in Rangpur region

RANGPUR, Feb 9: Fragrance of mustard flowers fills the air making the beholders enchanted as the mustard fields of Rangpur region have taken a captivating look.
The excellent growing mustard fields at different areas of the region are signalling a bumper yield of the cash crop during the current Robi season.
The cultivators of the region are optimistic about attaining a good output this season due to conducive weather condition and timely supply of adequate agri-inputs.
According to DAE sources mustard has been cultivated on 30,959 hectares of lands in Rangpur agriculture region during the current season against its target to cultivate it on 26, 632 hectares with a production target of 30,651 tonnes of oilseed. Farmers of the region have been showing their interest in the cultivation of the crop owing to easy cultivation process and lower production cost compared to many other crops, sources said. For this reason its cultivation is increasing significantly across the region in recent years, sources added.
Expressing satisfaction a good number of mustard growers told the Financial Express that earlier they used to grow other crops on their lands but did not earn expected profit. But since they began cultivating mustard instead of other crops they have been getting fairly good profit. Its cultivation process is also easier than most of the crops, they further said.
Joynal Mia (55), a farmer of Hamidpur village under Mithapukur Upazila in Rangpur told The Financial Express that he cultivated the crop on 45 decimals of his land during this season and is expecting a good output if the weather remains congenial. Being a lucrative crop its cultivation has gained much popularity among the growers of the region, he also said.
Sahjahan Ali (50), another farmer of Laldighi village at Taraganj Upazila in Rangpur district said, he cultivated the crop on one bigha of land this season with the hope to achieve a good profit. He is quite happy to witness the well-grown mustard plants promising a bumper production. Cultivation of the crop requires only two to three times irrigation while about Tk 2,500 to Tk 3,000 is required for cultivating the crop on one bigha of land, he also said.
Deputy Director of DAE Rangpur Zulfiqar Haider said the cultivation of mustard is increasing in the region as the farmers found its cultivation lucrative in comparison with other crops. Its cultivation has exceeded the target in the region this season.
DAE is helping the growers by supplying quality seeds, fertilisers and other agri-inputs to them in order to boost up its yield, he added.
