Monday, 31 March 2014

Mystery shrouded the death of a police officer on election duty at a polling centre in Shahjadpur Upazila (UZ) in Sirajganj on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Asaduzzaman, 37, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Raiganj Police Station. Police and election officers said Asaduzzaman was on duty at Gopinathpur Government Primary School polling centre in the north-western district on Sunday night, on the eve of voting to the Shahjadpur UZ. Suddenly he collapsed in the polling station and died. They said Asaduzzaman died of heart attack, a claim contradicted by the locals and the witnesses. They claimed Asaduzzaman had gone to the polling station with election materials on Sunday evening. He looked OK and was doing his poll duty well. But at night, he suddenly fell on the ground. He was rescued by on-duty staff and security personnel at the polling station and taken to a local hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead on arrival. However, the doctor at the Khwaza Yunus Ali Medical College could not be reached over phone for comments. Polling officials and cops at the polling centre further claimed that Asaduzzaman, who hailed from Kushtia’s Daulatpur Upazila, complained of headache before he collapsed, according to a news agency.
