FE REPORT | Friday, 23 June 2023
The existing flood situation in the country's northern part may persist in the next 3-4 days, as most of the major rivers in the area are in a rising trend, according to a bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
As a result, people in the low-lying areas or char region may suffer and crops may be inundated, said its officials.
Talking to The Financial Express, FFWC Duty Officer Partho Protim Barua said flood situation is prevailing in the country's northern part, and it may continue until Monday.
After the period, the situation in the region may improve, he added.
The Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours. The Ganges-Padma rivers are also in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 72 hours, according to the FFWC forecast.
Major rivers in the north-eastern region are rising, which may continue in the next 24 hours.
Citing some weather forecasting agencies, the FFWC stated that there is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the north-eastern region in the next 24 hours. As a result, water level of the rivers of this region may rise steadily.
Due to heavy rainfall in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar basin and adjoining upstream region in the next 24 hours, these rivers may rise rapidly at times, as per the FFWC forecast.
In next 24 hours, the Teesta river may flow close to the danger level at Dalia point and the Dudhkumar river may cross the danger level at Pateshwari point.
In its 109 monitored water level stations across the country, 82 stations are rising while 22 are falling, the FFWC flood forecast added.
