Nabanno festival today

FE REPORT | Monday, 16 November 2020

'Nabanno', the traditional new harvest festival, will be celebrated across the country today (Monday), marking the first day of Agrahayan, the eighth month of the Bangla calendar year.
But this time around, most farmers are worried about the yield of Aman crops as a series of floods and attack by brown plant hopper bug in many places have badly affected the cultivation of the crops, according to insiders.
Although majority Bangalees along with ethnic communities across the country will celebrate the festival today, many farmers will mark the 'Nabanno 1427' on the first Friday of Agrahayan. Aman was once the major crop for Bangladeshi agrarian communities, so the festival takes place in this season.
Delowar Jahan, founder of Prakritik Krishi, an organisation dedicated to promoting chemical fertiliser- and pesticide-free farming, said a special traditional food, namely 'nabanno' (new food), is served on the day.
