Nagad shifts focus to skill-based recruitment instead of certificates

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 14 June 2023

Nagad, a leading mobile financial service provider in Bangladesh, has adopted a skill-based approach to employee recruitment, rather than relying solely on educational qualifications or academic certificates.
This new recruitment strategy, introduced in March of this year, opened doors to numerous talented young professionals who were previously overlooked for corporate positions due to their lack of academic credentials.
Shaharear Sayeed, the head of Nagad's human resources department, hailed this decision to prioritise skills over certificates as a significant move.
He underlined the importance of selecting skilled workers, asserting that certificates alone were insufficient without the necessary skill sets.
Alif Ahmed, one of the newly recruited executives, recently joined Nagad despite having a lack of academic certificates.
Alif's expertise in video content creation and editing earned him a position as a senior executive, allowing him to pursue a job he was passionate about and excelled in, according to a Nagad official.
Shaharear says, "Many individuals nowadays are acquiring valuable skills in various subjects even before completing their formal education."
As a result, Nagad, with a workforce of over 750 employees, prioritised a candidate's experience, skills, and proficiency in the specific field.
"It no longer matters whether you have a certificate or not... we are no longer interested in that aspect... if you possess the necessary skills, Nagad is the ideal workplace for you," added Shaharear.
To ensure that selected candidates truly possess the required abilities for their designated roles, each specialised department at Nagad implemented a separate skill test system.
A job aspirant is given an appointment letter only after they successfully pass this skill test.
This meticulous process guarantees that candidates are truly qualified for their positions, according to Nagad officials.
