Nagging Indo-Bangla issues to be resolved through dialogues: President

President Zillur Rahman Monday said the outstanding issues between Bangladesh and India would be resolved amicably through dialogues and negotiations as the two countries are trusted friends and next-door neighbours, reports UNB.
"I firmly believe the pending unresolved issues between the two countries would be resolved through dialogues and negotiations," the President said this while speaking at the convocation of the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the city Monday.
Visiting former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam attended the function as the convocation speaker while Dr Gauhar Rizvi, adviser to the Prime Minister, was special guest on the occasion.
Welcoming the former Indian President, Mr Zillur Rahman said he (Dr Kalam) is well-known to Bangladeshi people who received him with the highest esteem and regards. "We have fraternal relations between Bangladesh and India, tied together by our common historical and cultural heritage."
The President solemnly remembered the immense contributions made by India during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. "I believe, as the goodwill ambassador, you (Dr Kalam) would carry our best wishes to the brotherly people of India," he said.
Describing his presence as a unique milestone both for the two peoples and the UITS, Mr Zillur Rahman said as the eleventh President of India Dr Kalam had played a commendable role in developing peace, prosperity and stability in South Asia.
"I fervently hope that the entire mankind, particularly the people of this region, would be benefited through your knowledge and wisdom which is dedicated to the humanity," he said of the scholarly scientist-turned-public- figure of India.
The President told his audience that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced 'Vision-2021' with a view to transforming the country into digital Bangladesh by 2021 when her golden jubilee of independence would be celebrated.
"I believe the universities, particularly ICT universities, have great role in materializing the hopes and aspirations of the people," he said.
Emphasizing science education alongside learning commerce and humanities from primary to higher education, Zillur Rahman said the country's young generation would have to be built competently with the science and ICT knowledge by making necessary efforts. "There is no alternative to competence to sustain in the competitive world."
Congratulating the fresh graduates from the university, the President urged them to play a pioneering role in development of the country being imbued with the sprit of Liberation War while remaining firm on integrity and honesty. "Always place the country and national interest above all," said the veteran politician.
