Nagorik Chhatra, Jubo Oikya demand withdrawal of VAT on pvt univs

Nagorik Chhatra and Jubo Oikya, the student and the youth wing of Nagorik Oikya, demanded on Saturday the withdrawal of 7.5 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on private universities, reports UNB.
The demand was raised at a human chain in front of National Press Club.
Nagorik Oikya Chief Adviser SM Akram, Nagorik Oikya Dhaka South City Unit Convener Abu Bakar Siddique, Dhaka North City Unit Convener Shahidullah Kayser, Jubo Oikya coordinator Shahinul Alam, Nagorik Chhatra Oikya Convener Nazmul Ahsan , among others, spoke on the occasion.
Demanding immediate withdrawal of VAT on tuition fees of private university, SM Akram said the government is now treating education as a product. As a result, they are imposing VAT on education.
He also said how universities will pay the VAT? They will manage it from the students. Students will be affected by the decision of the government.
They also denounced the attack on the students' non-violent movement by police and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
