Nahid urges universities to ensure quality higher edn

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Friday urged the authorities of the country's public and private universities to ensure quality education at higher levels, reports BSS.
He said a knowledge-based society is a must for sustainable development and for addressing the challenges of the 21st century.
He was addressing as the chief guest at a re-union of ex-students of the Shamsunnahar Hall of the Dhaka University (DU) at the Teachers Students Centre (TSC) auditorium while DU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique was present as the special guest.
The Education Minister said the education system should be promoted with creativity and innovation turning the universities into powerhouses of knowledge.
He said the key job of the universities should be growing confidence and commitment among the students for their capacity building to lead the nation towards progress.
The University of Dhaka had played a key role in all national movements for democracy and autonomy, including the historic Language Movement of 1952 and the War of Liberation in 1971, he added.
The minister pointed out that the Shamsunnahar Hall had produced innumerable meritorious citizens of the country who left their marks in different spheres of the national life.
He said the main task of the universities is to carry out research works for the development of a country.
