Nahid warns of FE Reportlegal action against illegal occupants of JnU halls

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid warned of legal action Wednesday against the people who illegally occupied the Jagannath University (JnU) dormitories for a long period.
"Please, evacuate the university's residential halls from the illegal occupation soon; otherwise the ministry along with the university authorities will take legal action," the Minister said this while expressing his solidarity with the ongoing protest.
Mr Nahid reiterated his assurance to help in recovering the university's dormitories while the protesting students of the university blocked the key intersection of the city's Raysaheb Bazar areas.
He told the demonstrators that he had talked to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as well as the land ministry regarding the issue. Nahid said he is very hopeful of freeing the halls soon.
Besides, the former Post and Telecom Minister also incumbent lawmaker Advocate Shahara Khatun assured the protesting students of placing the issue in parliament for discussion. The former minister made the assurance while she was going to attend a discussion in the area Wednesday.
Earlier, the university students under the banner of 'JnU Sangram Parishad to Recover Occupied Halls' blocked streets in the city's Raysaheb Bazar areas and set ablaze plastic tyres on the streets that caused serious traffic tailback in the link roads for several hours.
Convener of the platform Bangladesh Chhatra League JnU unit president MM Shafiqul Islam said they blocked the roads as they came to know that a number of cabinet members would join a programme in the area.
The demonstrating students and teachers Monday announced three-day programmes including collection of mass signatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, and demonstration and submission of memorandum to the education ministry Thursday to realise their demands.
The protesting students have also been demanding immediate withdrawal of Officer -in- Charge (OC) of Kotwali thana Mohammad Moniruzzaman and Lalbag DC Harun-or-Rashid for their alleged involvement in the attack on the students Mondaythat left at least 20 students injured.
JnU Teachers Association (JnUTA) also expressed its solidarity with the ongoing protest of the students terming it legitimate and rational. They also formed several human chains on the university campus and demanded exemplary punishment to the police personnel responsible for Sunday's attack on the students.
The students have been demonstrating since February 12, demanding recovery of their 11 dormitories, including Tibbat Hall, in different parts of Old Dhaka from illegal occupation.
