Namaj-e-janaza of four army officers held

Thursday, 12 March 2009

The nation Wednesday mourned the two senior army officers, including Jessore's GOC, who died in Monday's helicopter crash in Tangail, report UNB and bdnews24.com.

Maj Gen Rafiqul Islam, general officer commanding of Jessore-based 55 Infantry Division, and pilot Lt Col Shahidul Islam were killed when their helicopter crashed at Rouhat in Kalihati Upazila at around 8am Monday after hitting power lines.

Injured co-pilot Major Saif is being treated at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka Cantonment.

Namaj-e-janaza was held Wednesday for Maj Gen Rafiqul and Lt Col Shahid, as well as two officers, Col Gulzar Uddin Ahmed and Lt Col Manzur-e-Elahi Chowdhury, who were killed in the BDR mutiny last month.

The bodies of Col Gulzar Uddin Ahmed and Lt Col Manzur-e-Elahi were identified Tuesday, almost two weeks after their death, through DNA tests and fingerprint matching, respectively.

The janaza was held at the Army Stadium in the afternoon.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday morning visited the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) to see the bodies of Major General Rafiqul Islam and Lt Col Shahidul Islam.

A four-man Scotland Yard team that arrived in Dhaka Wednesday will not investigate the BDR carnage but advise law-enforcing agencies as to how the UK would conduct investigation into a matter of this magnitude.
