Name of BGB will be changed in course of time: Moudud

Thursday, 24 February 2011

BNP front ranking leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed Wednesday strongly criticised the government for changing the name of BDR to BGB and said it would be again changed in due time to restore the dignity of the paramilitary force, reports UNB.
The former Law Minister speaking at a discussion on "Pilkhana Massacre - Target Bangladesh" organised by Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA) at the National Press Club in the city Wednesday.
Presided over by JAGPA president Shafiul Alam Prodhan, BJP secretary general Shamim Al Mamun, IOJ secretary general Abdul Latif Nezami, Jamaat-e-Islmia Dhaka city acting Ameer Hamidur Rahman Azad MP and former BDR chief Maj Gen (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman took part in the discussion.
Barrister Moudud said Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) was a historic and dignified institution. It has been undermined by changing the name to Border Guard, Bangladesh (BGB).
He said the troops of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) were scared of BDR in the past. BGB is now looked down upon as mere guards.
He questioned the wisdom and necessity of changing the name and smelt a conspiracy behind it. He said when time will come our paramilitary force will be reorganised.
Referring to the Pilkhana carnage in February 2009 he said a section of the government was directly involved in the massacre.
"Those involved in the conspiracy would be exposed and brought to the dock."
Turning to amendment and reprinting of the Constitution, the BNP leader said it has done shifting the blame on the court. This is illegal and unconstitutional. Action will be taken against those who are amending the constitution misinterpreting the verdict of the court.
Mr Rahman, who headed the BDR in 2001 lamented the killing of 57 army officers at Pilkhana under a conspiracy. He recalled that after the massacre in February 2 years ago, many people talked about the conspiracy and raised finger at an external force for the killing in connivance with their local agents.
He said the government must unearth the conspiracy. But ironically the present government would not do it.
