Sunday, 27 July 2008

Shaheed Dr Fazle Rabbi Foundation has demanded the naming of the proposed medical college in Pabna after the martyred intellectual for paying respect to his memory, reports UNB.

The foundation placed their demand at a press conference held at the National Press Club in the city Saturday.

In a written statement, foundation President Shaheen Reza Noor said many organizations have been named after the martyred freedom fighters, intellectuals in different areas of the county. But, in many respects, political views were there behind the decision at that time, he added.

He expressed hope that the present caretaker government would take action in naming the medical college neutrally.

The statement stated that in 1971 Dr Rabbi provided treatment to the freedom fighters taking risk on his own life and fell victim to the wrath of the occupation forces and their collaborators.

The collaborators picked him up on the eve of the independence and later his body was recovered from Rayerbazar killing field on December 18, 1971.

Former Principal of Dhaka Medical College Dr Waliullah, Dr Rashid-E-Mahbub, Dr Mujibul Haq and poet Asad Chowdhury were, among others, present at the press conference.
