Naogaon peasants happy over good yield of winter vegetables

NAOGAON, Nov 26: Farmers of Badalgachi Upazila under the district are happy over the good yield of winter vegetables.
Cauliflower, cabbage, bean, brinjal, tomato, carrot, cucumber, bottle gourd, white gourd, spinach and cowpea produced in the areas are being sent to different places of the country including Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna.
Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said, this year around 4,000 acres of land have been brought under vegetable cultivation in eight unions of the upazila.
One Lutfar Mia of Adhaipur village under the upazila informed, he cultivated tomatoes on 18 decimals of land this season. He is expecting a handsome profit from the cultivation as he got Tk. 55,000 from the same land last year.
Laim Uddin of the same area said he farmed early variety bean on one bigha of land where he earned Tk. 90,000 from the produce.
Farmer Mokaram of Paharpur village said he cultivated bottle gourd on one bigha of land spending around Tk. 14,000. He has sold three-third of the produce at Tk. 60,000 till now while he is expecting Tk. 20,000 to 25,000 more.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Hasan Ali stated peasants in the area these days are showing more interest to cultivate winter vegetables than that of the other Robi crops.
If the current price remains stable throughout the season, farmers would bring more land under vegetables cultivation in the next few years, Mr. Ali added.
