NAP for new law to form credible EC
Tuesday, 10 January 2012
Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP) Monday favoured a specific law under article 118 of the constitution to form next election commission (EC) in the dialogue with President M Zillur Rahman, reports BSS.
"There should be a specific law, on the basis of which the next chief and other election commissioners would be appointed," NAP General Secretary Advocate Enamul Haque told reporters after talks with the President at Bangabhaban.
General Secretary of NAP said the dialogue was held in a congenial atmosphere and in the dialogue they said the EC should be formed with those personalities, who are committed to the country and not biased to any political party.
Replying to a question, he said they didn't discuss anything about caretaker government (CG) system as the matter is related to parliament, not to the President.
NAP Presidium Member Amina Ahmed, MP, led the nine-member delegation to the dialogue.
President Rahman will join dialogue with Bangladesh Khelafath Andalon, Bangladesh Khelafath Mojlish and Gonotrantic Islamic Okkyajot today (Tuesday).
Bikalpadhara Bangladesh President Prof Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury said at the time his dialogue with the President that CG system needs to be restored to make the next national elections free, fair and neutral.
Prof Chowdhury led a 12-member delegation including the party's Secretary General Major (retd) Abdul Mannan.
He said they urged the President to take initiatives of publishing the full verdict of Supreme Court on the 15th Amendment to the constitution and CG system within 15 days.
"If the full verdict is published, the countrymen can understand why the court observed that the next two polls should be held under the CG system," he said.
"It's not possible to hold influence free polls under a political government," he said.
About the formation of EC, the Bikalpadhara President said, "as per our proposal, parliament has to cancel the 15th Amendment of the constitution first and then make provisos for extending the duration of the current Election Commission (EC) till the end of the present government's tenure,"
After formation of the caretaker government, Prof Chowdhury said they (caretaker government) would appoint the next chief and other election commissioners of the new EC.
