Wednesday, 30 April 2014

Three officials of two law-enforcing agencies have been removed after eight people including a city corporation councillor were abducted within two weeks in Narayanganj. They are Narayanganj district’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Syed Nurul Islam, Rab commanding officer (CO) Tarek Sayeed Mahmud and OC of Fatulla Police Station Aktar Hossain. State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal confirmed that the trio has been withdrawn. Asked whether they were removed over the abductions, he said, “Not exactly.” The decision was made after taking “all the issues into account,” he added. On Sunday noon, Narayanganj City Corporation’s Ward Number 2 Councillor Nazrul Islam, who is also a supporter of ruling Awami League, and four of his aides were abducted. Around the same time, a senior lawyer in the district, Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver ‘Ibrahim’ also went missing. Twelve days earlier, a group of unknown miscreants had abducted businessman Abu Bakar Siddique, husband of environmental lawyer Syeda Rizwana Hasan, from Bhuigarh on Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road in Fatulla. He was, however, released by the abductors several days later and found in Dhaka’s Kalabagan. Besides, a Jubo League leader was killed and his body was dumped in Shitalakkha River after abduction two years ago. Apart from that several local leaders and activists of Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League and Ganajagaran Mancha were killed by unknown assailants following abduction in the last few years, according to a news agency.
