Some protesting students set fire to Narsingdi district jail and broke the jail gate on Friday, helping prisoners to escape, reports UNB.
However, the exact number of prisoners who escaped could not be known immediately.
Efforts to reach the jail super, deputy commissioner and officer-in-charge (OC) of Narsingdi police station were futile as they didn't pick their phones.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in the jail area in the afternoon and broke the gate of the jail allowing the prisoners to escape.
Later, they set fire to the jail.
As of 7 pm, the jail was completely empty.
Besides, the protesters set fire to Narsingdi Zilla Parishad Bhaban, Madhobi Municipal Bhaban and Madhobi Thana Bhaban.
It was learnt that there were more than 700 prisoners in the jail.
