Nation celebrates Bangabandhu's birthday

GOPALGANJ, Mar 17 (bdnews24.com): President Mohammad Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the nation commemorated his 92nd birth anniversary Saturday.
The ruling Awami League (AL) and its associate organisations held various programmes across the country to mark the occasion.
The day was also observed as National Children Day in all educational institutions across the country.
Sheikh Mujib was born on this day at Tungipara of Gopalganj district in 1920. He was the third among six children of Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and Saima Begum.
He grew into a natural leader and guided the Bangalees through a struggle for freedom from oppressive Pakistani rulers. Later, he became the first president of the independent Bangladesh.
The day's programme commenced with Sheikh Hasina's, Bangabandhu's elder daughter, placing wreaths on the animated bust of the nation's father.
Hasina then went to Tungipara at around 10am to pay respect at Bangabandhu's grave. The president followed her around 10:20am.
The president was the first to pay tribute at the grave at 10:30 am and then the prime minister paid hers by placing wreaths.
A well-dressed contingent combining three forces gave guard of honour at the time. There was recitation from the holy Qur'an. A special prayer was also held.
The president then signed the book of comments kept at the Bangabandhu Complex.
A cultural programme and children's gathering along with a book fair were arranged at Tungipara to mark the occasion.
AL also organised a discussion meeting at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre Saturday.
The president and the prime minister issued separate messages on the occasion.
The president in a statement urged the new generation to be inspired by patriotism.
"The new generation has to be brought up to be 'golden people' so that Bangabandhu's dream of 'sonar Bangla' comes true," he said.
The prime minister separately called upon everyone to vow to make Bangladesh a safe abode for the children on the occasion.
