Nation celebrates Independence Day today
Thursday, 26 March 2009
The nation celebrates the 39th Independence Day today (Thursday) with a fresh pledge to build a prosperous Bangladesh with equal opportunities for all to realise the dreams of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to free the motherland from the then Pakistani occupation forces, reports UNB.
On this day (March 26) in 1971, the unarmed valiant Bangalees of the then East Pakistan burst into a flame to resist the Pakistani occupation forces, who unleashed the worst genocide in the world's history to suppress them.
The peace-loving people took up arms as their paramount leader, father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, declared independence on March 26. The victory was achieved on December 16 after a nine-month liberation war.
Different political and socio-cultural organisations have chalked out various programmes to mark the day, reflecting the spirit of the liberation war that was originally articulated in four state principles -- nationalism, democracy, socialism and secularism.
Meanwhile, the government has cancelled the national parade for March 26, the Independence Day, against the grim backdrop of the February 25-26 carnage at the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters.
The ceremonious national parade has been persistently organised at the National Parade Square to celebrate the nation's independence.
On the occasion, President Zillur Rahman would lay wreath at the National Mausoleum in the morning to lead the nation in paying highest tributes to the martyrs.
Besides, Bangabhaban will host a reception for people of all walks of life and another for the family members of martyred Bir Sreshthas in the evening.
On the occasion, the ruling Awami League has taken up a two-day programme.
The programmes include hoisting national and party flags atop Bangabandhu Bhaban and all party offices across the country, paying tribute to the National Mausoleum and placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Museum Thursday (March 26) and a discussion tomorrow (Friday).
Dhaka University authority has also chalked out elaborate programmes. These include hoisting national flags atop different buildings and halls, rally at "Aparajeyo Bangla", placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum, discussion, cultural programmes and distribution of sweets among the children of varsity employees.
