Nation observes Jail Killing Day today
FE Report | Monday, 3 November 2014
The Jail Killing Day commemorating the assassination of four national leaders will be observed across the country today (Monday).
The day is considered as a black chapter in the nation's history, as four Liberation War heroes -- Syed Nazrul Islam, acting president of Bangladesh government in exile in 1971, Tajuddin Ahmed, prime minister of the same government, M Mansur Ali, finance minister and AHM Qamaruzzaman, minister for home affairs, relief and rehabilitation -- were killed in captivity by some misguided Army officers.
They were assassinated inside the Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975 -- 79 days after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were killed on August 15, 1975.
Ruling Awami League (AL) and many other organisations have chalked out various programmes including discussions, placing wreaths at the graves of the four national leaders, milad mahfil and feeding of the destitutes to pay tribute to the national leaders.
Marking the day, Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and other TV channels and radio stations will air special programmes while the newspapers will publish special articles on the four national leaders.
