NEW YORK, Feb 09: Healthcare like economic crisis and rising tide of terrorism are on President Obama's priority list. He has reiterated time and again his determination to grapple with all three problems without any let up. Healthcare seems to be at the top of the agenda now.
Republicans have responded with gusto to President Obama's call for a televised White House bipartisan meeting on healthcare.
Republicans are said to be ready with a fairly well developed set of ideas intended to make healthcare more widely available and affordable by emphasising tax incentives and state innovations and with new federal mandate.
The national debate has been set for Feb 25 at the Blair House, just opposite the White House. The healthcare could turn into a nightmare if two sides fail to reach an agreement. There are now 49 million people without any health coverage in the USA.
Nationwide the cost of unpaid care for hospitals which includes charity care as well as money that could not be collected from patients is around $36 billion. It is expected to spiral, the New York Times reported today.
Democratic party lawmakers and officials expressed deep scepticism that Obama's latest attempt to revive healthcare reform will have any better chances of succeeding than earlier attempts. Republicans have made it clear that they have no appetite for embracing the 10-year $871 billion bill passed in the Senate and more expensive $1000 billion bill passed by the House.
And on the economic plane, China's keeps on doing wonder with little or no attention. China's sovereign wealth fund quitely bought more than $9billion worth of shares last year in some of the biggest American corporations including behemoths like Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and Citigroup.
