CHITTAGONG, Apr 10: Drishty-Chittagong, a leading debate organisation of the country, has long been working to build up a rational society. In the wake of arranging so many events for the last 18 years Drishty this year has successfully orchestrated its 11th inter-school and 5th inter-varsity debate championship titled BSRM-The Daily Star-Drishty National English Debate Championship 2011. The competition started with a workshop on March 29, where all the participating debaters of schools and universities were oriented on the rules and regulations of the event. School debate was held in WSDC format while university debate had the format of WUDC. The competition kicked off on April 1 with a tour to Kaptai, the picturesque hilly region of Bangladesh. The debaters and moderators were taken to Baraichhari Primary School where the first rounds of school and varsity level debates were arranged. Each debater, enchanted by the beauty of green hill tracts and the natural beauty of Kaptai, enjoyed a lot while partaking the war of logic. To date, this is the only national debate competition of Bangladesh that witnessed a breaking night in this fascinating part of our country, organisers said. After the attractive tour to Kaptai the contest found its semi-finalists of both levels. On the next day the semi-finals were arranged at the Theatre Institute, Chittagong. With an extraordinary battle of logic the IUB, NSU, IUT and CU1 won the tickets to the grand finale in varsity level competition, and Bangladesh Elementary School and Chittagong Collegiate School in the school level competition. The grand finale of the championship was hosted at the TIC auditorium on April 4. The whole battle was so close while the North South University (NSU) and Bangladesh Elementary School became the champs and Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and Chittagong Collegiate School became runners-up respectively in the university and school level. At the closing ceremony Drishty Debate Club chairwoman Safia Gazi Rahman said, "When people dream of a better future we want our dreams come true. When they desire for change, we try to ascertain our change. When all look for success we spread our success everywhere to encourage others." Chairman and MD of BSRM Group Alihussain Akbarali, Prothom Alo resident editor Abul Momen, Daily Star bureau chief AKM Raisul Huq Bahar and Drishty-Chittagong president Masud Bokul handed over the awards.
