National grid fails plunging NW parts into darkness

Friday, 7 September 2007

The national power grid partially failed Thursday evening plunging the whole of northeastern region of the country into darkness, reports UNB.
Official sources said a glitch in the 230KV East-West Inter-connector (EWIC), the only power-transmission line between the country's east and west crossing over the river Jamuna, snapped the electricity system of all the districts in the northern, western and southern parts.
The tripping of the grid put many districts, including Khulna, Rajshahi, Barisal, Patuakhali, Bogra, Sirajganj and Pabna, under a sudden blackout.
According to officials of the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh
(PGCB), the double-circuit EWIC tripped at 6:22 pm, which also led to a colossal shutdown of the power plants located in the northern and southwestern regions.
The 100MW Baghabari and 90MW Westmont plants and 100 KPCL plant in Khulna and 125MW unit of Barapukuria plant were among the plants that came to a grinding halt under the impact of the grid failure.
PGCB Managing Director Harunur Rashid told UNB that they were trying hard to ascertain the cause of the tripping of EWIC. "But we are not yet sure why such problem occurred," he said at 7:40pm.
Sources said the power-transmission system was restored at first
circuit of EWIC at 6:52 pm while the second one came into operation at 6:54 pm.
However, resumption of operation of the power plants could not be possible till the filing of the report at 8:00 pm.
Power Development Board (PDB) Acting Chairman Khijir Khan said he was hopeful of resuming operation of the closed plants soon.
