Saturday, 21 July 2007

NOAKHALI, July 20 (UNB/bdnews24.com): Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed Friday called for a national unity to build Bangladesh as a completely independent and prosperous nation as the opportunity is now on hand.
"Now our responsibility is to build a sovereign and prosperous Bangladesh through concerted endeavours," he said while laying the foundation stone of Bir Srestha Shaheed Ruhul Amin Library and Memorial Museum at Bagpanchra village in Sonaimuri Upazila in the after noon.
Speaking at a civic gathering at a local school ground on the occasion, the Army Chief said heroic freedom fighters had joined the war of independence at the call of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1971 and liberated the country.
The army chief said Bangabandhu has to be placed appropriately in textbooks.
"Work on the matter is ongoing," Moeen said adding that other national leaders like Bangabandhu have to be kept in their right places.
His comment came amid a government move to recognise Independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the "Father of the Nation" and Ziaur Rahman as the "proclaimer of independence on behalf of Bangabandhu" in textbooks for next year.
The army chief Friday renamed Bagpanchra village in the southeastern district Bir Shreshtha Ruhul Amin Nagar after Bir Shreshtha Ruhul Amin, who was born in the same village. On December 10, 1971, Bir Srestha Shaheed Ruhul Amin embraced martyrdom in the enemy bombardment while sailing warship "Shapla" from Mongla to Khulna. Another warship, "Palash", tugged with the "Shapla" was destroyed in the enemy air attack.
General Moeen said the nation is proud of the Independence and indebted to the heroic sons who made supreme sacrifice to achieve the Independence. He said the government has decided to incorporate the history of national heroes in textbooks for class one to nine so they should be remembered forever.
This will help the new generation learn the correct history of the Bengali nation, said general Moeen, whose force is acting in aid of the present caretaker government that has launched massive reforms. The civic gathering was also addressed, among others, by Noorjahan Begum, sister of Bir Srestha Shaheed Ruhul Amin, DC Habibul Kabir Chowdhury, and District Muktijoddha Unit Commander Mozammel Huq.
Earlier, the Army Chief unveiled the plaque of the Bir Srestha Shaheed Ruhul Amin Library and Memorial Museum built on 50-decimal land at a cost of Tk 600,000 (6 lakh). He planted an olive sapling. Comilla GOC Major General Hafiz was present.
