National unity based on 22 points suggested

CHITTAGONG, Nov 13 (UNB): Speakers at an open discussion Tuesday suggested forging national unity on the basis of the issues facing the nation and it was a prime need of the time for socio-economic uplift of the country.
The discussants emphasised fixing the historic framework proposed by the three alliances during the anti-autocracy movement in 1990 as the foundation of this national unity for a breakthrough in the prevailing situation.
Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) jointly sponsored the discussion at Chittagong Engineering Institute with chairman of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) Sadek Khan in the chair.
CCCI President Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, FBBCI Vice-president Mohammad Kamal Uddin, BGMEA Vice-president MA Salam, Chittagong Press Club President Ali Abbas and local leaders of the Awami League and the BNP, among others, spoke at the meeting.
The meeting also set forth 22 points as the basis of the proposed national unity.
PIB chairman Sadek Khan stressed the need for leading the country and the government in future on the basis of the 22- point charter.
The speakers also demanded trial of 'war criminals' involved in crime during the Liberation War in 1971.
"As the proposed national unity was not followed up in the past, corruption, terrorism, militancy and other offences found a foothold to proliferate," the speakers said in one voice.
Prices of essentials and other commodities are also continuously rising due to problems that had cropped up because the paramount need for national unity was not fulfilled, they observed. And the nation once again had halted at a crossroads following the recent political crisis, they said.
