Monday, 11 January 2010

FE Report
The National Domestic Child Worker Convention-2010 is going to be held tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city to make recommendations to the government for establishing rights of domestic child workers in the country.
Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), Together with Working Children (TWC), and Save the Children Sweden Denmark (SCSD) will organise the convention for the first time in the country.
While speaking at a press conference on the occasion at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the city Sunday, ASK Senior Deputy Director Geeta Chakraborty said quoting a 2006 Baseline Survey of BBS and UNICEF, "There are approximately 400,000 domestic child workers aged between 6-17 years in Bangladesh. Of them, around 132,000 are in Dhaka city alone."
"Almost 78 per cent of the domestic child workers are girls and approximately 94 per cent are full timers (available 24 hours for work) and 6 per cent work as part timers," she added.
She said, "The service of child workers is always cheap and they are the high risk group for common occurrences in Bangladesh."
"What is alarming until now is that gender discrimination and exploitation of child domestic workers continue unabated in the country," she added.
Labour and Employment Minister Eng. Khandker Mosharraf Hossain will inaugurate the day-long convention.
Around 1,000 people including 400 domestic child workers, 100 employers and parents from six divisions will attend the convention.
