Nat'l football team leaves for India tomorrow

Wednesday, 15 August 2007

A 20-member Bangladesh national football team, led by stopper Kazi Nazrul Islam, will leave here for New Delhi on Thursday (Aug 16) morning to participate in the traditional Nehru Cup Football tournament, reports UNB.
The five-team Nehru Cup Football tournament will be held in New Delhi on August 17-29.
Ahead of the tournament, the national team made their final practice Tuesday under the supervision of famed Indian coach Syed Nayeemuddin.
But the players, who began training at BKSP in Savar on August 1, had little time to prepare themselves for the tournament as rains often made the practice ground unplayable and halted training sessions frequently.
The national team have a fair chance of doing well in the Nehru Cup Football as the team comprises some experienced and talented players, BFF acting general secretary Manjoor Hosain Malu said.
Asked if the players could prepare themselves properly for the tough meet, Malu said the players had got enough time to practice as they had been playing football for their respective clubs for the last six months through the just concluded B. League.
Replying to a question if the Malaysia-bound team for Merdeka Cup is comparatively weak, he said: "I don't think so. The team for Merdeka Cup comprised some young talented players, who will give their best to have a chance in the ensuing SAFF championship."
In the Nehru Cup, Bangladesh will play Syria on Aug 18, hosts India on Aug 20, Cambodia on Aug 22 and Kyrgystan on Aug 24, initially on league basis.
Meanwhile, the 23-member Bangladesh squad for Merdeka Cup Football, practising under the supervision of coach Hasanuzzaman Bablu at the BKSP in Savar, will leave for Kuala Lumpur on Aug 18 on completion of their practice sessions on Aug 16.
The eight-team Merdeka Cup Football tournament will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 19-29.
Bangladesh, placed in Group B, will play Indonesia on Aug 21, Singapore on Aug 23 and Zimbabwe on Aug 25.
Earlier, on Sunday, Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) announced separate national teams for two international soccer meets -- Nehru Cup and Merdeka Cup.
