The government will formulate a national policy for technical and vocational education and training in order to establish a quality-oriented and need-based education system in the country, official sources said.
The European Commission (EC) will assist the government to prepare the policy and undertake other development works for upgrading the standard of country's technical and vocational education.
The donor agency will provide Euro14 million ($20.07 million) as grant to improve the quality of Bangladesh's technical education system.
A financing agreement to this effect was signed between the government of Bangladesh and the EC in Dhaka Monday.
ERD secretary Aminul Islam Bhuiyan representing the government and ambassador and head of the delegation of the EC in Dhaka Dr Stefan Frowein signed the deal.
Under the EC-supported 'Technical and Vocational Education and Training' project, the Ministry of education will work to improve the standard of technical education in the country.
Sources in the education ministry said under the EC-supported project, the government would improve legal and regulatory system in the technical education sector, develop the existing technical and vocational institutions supplying modern equipments, train the managers and teachers for their professional improvement, ensure access of the underprivileged people to the technical education for improving their expertise, and establish linkages between training institutes and local enterprises to facilitate employment of the students.
The education ministry with the help of International Labour Organisation (ILO) will implement the project over a five-year period.
The EC will provide the government $20.07 million financial assistance in line with the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) of the country to overcome poverty, Dr Frowein said.
He stated improving skills through well-targeted training is essential not only for increasing the capacity of individuals but also for the development of Bangladesh.
EC's financial support to the development of technical and vocational education will contribute significantly to the creation of a knowledge-based economy in Bangladesh, he opined.
