NATO admits killing girl in Afghan raid

KABUL, May 12 (AFP): US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan apologised Thursday after admitting its soldiers shot dead a young girl as she tried to flee an attack aimed at capturing a Taliban leader. The girl, aged 12, was killed during a joint Afghan and coalition operation in the eastern province of Nangarhar because she was suspected of being armed. She ran out of a compound during the attack Wednesday and was killed "when the security force mistakenly identified what they suspected was a weapon on the individual," the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.
