Tuesday, 16 September 2008

A total of 316 taxpayers from across the country were awarded crests and credentials at a function held Monday to mark observance of the first National Income Tax Day with the aim of sensitising the public about tax-related issues, reports bdnews24.com.
Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed who left for China on a visit was scheduled to attend the day's main event, organised by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre.
In the absence of the Chief Adviser, Finance Adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam was the chief guest on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, he stressed the need for gearing up efforts for internal revenue collection for a robust economy. Revenues from import duty came down due to worldwide trade liberalisation, he noted on the occasion while stating that the tax administration should do their job in an efficient and transparent manner.
He expressed the hope that tax reform measures that the caretaker government adopted in the budget for fiscal 2008-09 would help increase tax collection.
The NBR awarded the crests and certificates to recognise their good deeds. Three highest taxpayers in the last fiscal and two long-time taxpayers from each district have been awarded on the occasion. They will also be treated as CIPs (commercially important persons) in their own districts.
Samson H Choudhury of Square Group, who was awarded as the oldest taxpayer in Rajshahi Division, and businessman Rahimuddin Miah Bharasha of Rangpur, the highest taxpayer in the last fiscal for the same region, among others, spoke at the programme.
According to the NBR, Bharasha paid income taxes worth Tk 13.8 million in the last fiscal, while Younus Ali, the highest taxpayer in Dhaka division, paid Tk 7.3 million.
