NBR calls for transparency in CSR

The Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Dr. Nasiruddin Ahmed Saturday said the government is eager to promote CSR through tax incentives but transparency and accountability of CSR activities have to be maintained.
Dr. Nasir said this at a meeting with Management and Resources Development Initiative (MRDI) to discuss on expanding policy support to CSR in terms of scope and areas and potentials of CSR in fostering social development.
Referring to the tax exemption offered by the government, the discussants stressed upon proper monitoring of fair and proper use of the rebate by the corporate sector.
Earlier MRDI team proposed to introduce a system of inviting corporate sector to submit their annual CSR plan and apply for tax rebate. A committee will review the applications and recommend for tax rebates.
The discussants proposed to include specific activities on population programme, bio-diversity and climate change in the NBR's list of tax exemption on CSR.
The meeting decided that NBR and MRDI will discuss further to clarify the CSR issue to the corporate sector, expand the scope and area of CSR interventions and make the qualifying conditions easier.
Dr. Nasir highly appreciated the CSR advocacy initiatives of MRDI.

Shahid Hossain took part in the meeting.
