NBR chief emphasises on economic emancipation, self-reliance

GAIBANDHA, Mar 7 ( BSS): National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Mohammad Abdul Mazid laid emphasis on the need for economic emancipation and self-reliance.
"Since the independence, the country has received a total of Tk 370 billion (37,000 crore) as loan from other countries and the rate of per head loan is Tk 13,000 but failed to ensure the welfare of the nation".
The NBR chairman said this as the chief guest at a views exchange meeting on "Motivation for Payment of Taxes willingly, collection of VAT and pre-budget discussion' organised by the Gaibandha Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) at the Zila parishad auditorium in the town Saturday.
Poura Mayor Anwarul Hasan Sabur, Sadar Upazila Chairman Abdur Rashid Sarker and GCCI President Shajada Anwarul Quadir also spoke on the occasion.
Also present in the meeting were Commissioner (VAT) of Rajshahi M Lutfor Rahman and Commissioner of Taxes (Rajshahi zone) Golam Nabi as special guests.
The NBR chairman urged the eligible tax-payers to pay taxes timely for ensuring food, clothing, housing and shelter and treatment for all and governing the country without economic hardship.
Laying importance on increasing revenue collection to meet the revenue shortfall to support the growing government expenditure including implementation of development programmes, he asked the officials of taxes to bring more tax-payers under the tax net.
He also thanked the 47 tax-payers of the district for submitting their income tax returns timely and expressed the hope that others would follow them as responsible citizens of the country.
