NBR chief for less foreign loan, increased internal resources

BARISAL, Dec 3: National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Muhammad Abdul Majid called for lessening dependence on foreign loan and increasing internal resources, appreciated increase of tax payers in southern region even after the severe affect of hurricane Sidr.
The NBR chairman was speaking as chief guest of a exchange of views programme with tax payers, businessmen, financial institution and association leaders at Barisal Circuit House Monday.
"For reconstruction of the liberation war ravaged Bangladesh, we took external foreign aid but our failure to clear foreign loans put the burdens on the shoulder of the citizens to repay the huge foreign loans with high rate of compound interest," he said.
Regular payment of income and other taxes will create a strong bonding between the state and citizens and lessen dependence on foreign external resources for internal development of the country by creating own income generating funds, he added.
He said that only 93,000 people in the country this year submitted self-assessed return of income taxes and those who are trying to evade income taxes, they would face legal actions.
Khulna Customs and VAT Commissioner Nurul Islam presided over the programme. Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Principal Sayed Zahid Hossain and Barisal Chamber of Commerce and industries (BCCI) President Sheikh Mohammad Abdur Rahim participated as special guests.
Former BCCI vice president Abdur Razak, highest income tax payer Maniruzaman Talukdar, highest VAT payer of Barisal division, Ali Ahmed Khan of Pirojpur, Toufiq Ali Khan of Patuakhali, Lorence Gomez of Barguna Chamber of Commerce and Industries participated in the discussion.
