The National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem on Sunday said the people are reluctant to pay tax due to complexities in the payment method.
Many people having taxable income feel discouraged to pay tax due to the difficult method, he said, while inaugurating the software for online submission of tax returns on pilot basis for the Income Tax Zone-6 in Dhaka.
Currently, the online tax returns submission system in all tax zones remained suspended due to technical and procedural faults.
The revenue board chief expressed the hope that the newly launched software will be introduced in other tax zones too upon successful completion of the pilot programme.
He said automation of the system will facilitate paying the tax without hassle.
From now on, around 135,000 individual taxpayers under the zone-6 in Dhaka will be able to file their returns online using the web-based software of the zone.
In the online system, taxpayers will have to login-in in the website of the zone (www.taxeszone6.gov.bd) to file the returns, tax deducted at source or TDS returns, time extension application etc.
The NBR chairman said the process of automation delayed due to the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.
The last date for submission of tax returns by individual taxpayers will expire on November 30 next.
However, some tax officials expressed doubt over the success of the online return system in the zone-6 due to some faults in the procedures.
