NBR drive to motivate people to pay taxes launched
FE Report | Wednesday, 2 July 2008
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Tuesday launched a countrywide campaign to motivate people having taxable income in upazilla level to pay taxes with a considerable success.
On the first day, nearly 470 new taxpayers have taken Taxpayers Identification Number (TIN) at Kaliakoir under Gazipur district in presence of NBR chief.
An NBR team, headed by its chairman, visited the upazilla and attended a motivational programme for new taxpayers.
Officials of local administration, representatives of chamber bodies and shop owners also participated in the programme.
"It was our plan to launch a full-fledged drive to increase the number of taxpayers from the first day of the current fiscal," said NBR chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid after attending the programme at Kaliakoir.
The revenue board has to gear up efforts without wasting time as the government has set a higher revenue target for fiscal 2008-09, he added.
He expressed satisfaction over a significant response of new taxpayers on the first day of the campaign.
The NBR chairman will visit Hathazari upazilla in Chittagong on Thursday (tomorrow) as part of the campaign.
Officials said marginal taxpayers could play a major role in expansion of tax net.
The revenue board chief will pay visit to a number of upazillas across the country to motivate people to pay tax.
In 2008-09, the government set Tk 545 billion revenue generation target for NBR following a robust growth in tax collection in 2007-08.
