FE Report
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has further extended the deadline for submission of individuals' tax returns up to November 6 following poor response from the taxpayers.
Less than 0.2 million (2 lakh) individuals have submitted tax returns until now against a total of 0.64 million last fiscal.
The NBR earlier extended the deadline for tax return submission to October 31 from September 30.
The NBR for the second time has extended the time following requests from a cross section of people including leading chamber bodies.
Referring to the long government holidays on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and Durga Puja celebrated recently, a number of taxpayers requested the board to extend the timeframe.
There were strong recommendations from the high-level of government including the Election Commission (EC) on extension of the time for tax return submission, sources said.
Polls candidates will have to show the tax clearance certificates of the current tax assessment year to participate in elections as the EC is expected to announce the national election schedule on November 2 next.
The government will give the election candidates sufficient time to submit nominations along with documents on the current year's tax payment.
