The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended again the deadline for submission of individuals' tax returns up to November 12 following the Election Commission's (EC) request for extension of the time, sources said.
The NBR for the third time has extended the deadline. The last date for filing of individual tax return was initially set for September 30. It was later extended to October 31 and again to November 6 following poor response from the taxpayers.
Sources said there were strong recommendations from the high-level of government including the Election Commission (EC) on extension of the time for tax return submission.
Polls candidates will have to show the tax clearance certificates of the current tax assessment year to participate in elections as the EC announced the national election schedule November 2.
The government wants to give the election candidates sufficient time to submit nominations along with documents on the current year's tax payment.
The NBR has received Tk 7.50 billion against more than 0.57 million tax returns Thursday. The amount was Tk 7.39 billion against 0.64 million tax returns last year.
On Thursday, the NBR was busy compiling updated tax payment data until filing this report at 8 pm. The NBR was due to receive tax returns until 9 pm Thursday.
Most of the service holders submitted their tax returns in the extended period while a number of businessmen filed returns through tax consultants at last moment, tax officials said.
"It has become a common practice of taxpayers to wait until the last minute. We may give a specific time-frame for submission of returns from the next year rather than extending deadline several times," said NBR Chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid.
