The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will earn additional revenue of Tk 10 billion annually, if the government strengthens manpower and ensures logistics support to the tax offices.
It has made a revised proposal to the establishment ministry to expedite recruitment and expansion of the customs wing.
A high-powered team of the revenue board held a meeting with the establishment ministry officials recently to salvage the customs wing that is reeling from acute manpower shortages.
"We are running the activities of the customs department with extremely poor strength," said NBR member Farid Uddin.
The NBR has urged the government to address the issue with due priority, as no reform was carried out since 90s, he said.
The customs department has been collecting major portion of the revenue due to lack of integration in domestic tax collection and poor networking, he added.
The NBR has proposed to raise the number of customs circle offices to 243 from 109 and recruit at least 12,000 more officials.
For transportation, it has requested allocation of Tk 3.24 billion and Tk 115 million for setting up of new offices.
"It is necessary to address the growth centres for boosting domestic revenue," Mr Farid said.
