NBR hunts for taxpayers in city\\\'s posh areas

National Board of Revenue (NBR) is going to search for taxpayers at every house in city's posh areas this month as part of its initiative to bring 3.2 lakh new eligible people under tax net in the ongoing fiscal.
"The move has been initiated to bring the newly eligible people under tax net," NBR Chairman M Nojibur Rahman told the reporters.
He said: "Tax officials will visit house to house, and shops and business offices in the city's posh areas to find eligible taxpayers."
Mentioning that NBR carries out survey regularly in all tax circles to collect new taxpayers, the NBR chairman said: "We've included the special move this year with the regular job."
In addition, the regular survey would be conducted more attentively and perfectly, he added. "Country's economy is being expanded, but a good number of eligible people are yet to come under tax net that is why NBR has given concentration on catching the eligible taxpayers through the survey."
Nojibur said Local Government Division, Ministry of Public Works and Internal Resources Division will jointly conduct the drive.
The NBR has set a target of bringing its 29 tax circles under the Survey-2015 to find 20,000 new eligible taxpayers in each circle.
He said the government has a plan to increase the number of taxpayers to 30 lakh by 2018-19. At present, only 18 lakh people are submitting income tax returns although the country has nearly 16 crore citizens.
"Human resources of NBR are being increased to expand tax net. Moreover, NBR has started dialogue with different business bodies and organizations," said Nojibur.
In the current 2015-16 fiscal, revenue collection target has been set at Taka 1.76 thousand crore, of which Taka 66,000 crore as income tax return, according to BSS.
