Central Intelligence Cell of National Board of Revenue (NBR) has decided to launch criminal investigation from January next targeting specific groups of people who are evading taxes despite repeated warning by the NBR.
Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) has drawn an action plan to chase people evading taxes through concealment of wealth information, false declaration of import items and hiding actual business transaction.
"The intelligence cell for the first time has drawn such an action plan to net tax evaders. CIC has listed some vulnerable categories of people for tax evasion," said a top tax official.
The authorities have decided to strengthen the activities of the CIC and totally reorganise the department that could play a major role to enhancing tax collection, he said.
The CIC has been conducting financial enquiry into some select groups of people who include consultants, physicians, lawyers, service holders and businessmen, he added.
The cell has completed nearly 20 financial enquiries recently and found large amounts of tax evasion, he said.
"We are now holding one-to-one discussion with tax evaders to make them aware of the probable action by the NBR against them for non-payment of tax," the official added.
If the effort fails then it will launch criminal action against them from January 2010, he said.
The cell has taken the first-ever move to launch criminal action without help from other agencies, he added.
The NBR has decided to gear up activities of its intelligence cell to increase tax revenue collection so that it could achieve revenue collection target in the current fiscal, he said.
The cell has targeted people involved in false declaration of import and under-invoicing, and businesses concealing actual sales information to evade value added tax (VAT) and income tax dodgers, the official said.
