The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is contemplating introducing a separate window in BRTA offices to accept different types of taxes, including newly introduced advance income tax, from vehicle owners who often fall prey to harassment and deception.
The government has introduced the advance income tax measure in the 2009-2010 budget as it was revealed that almost 30 per cent of the TINs provided by vehicle owners at the time of registration were fictitious.
Under the new tax measure, car owners have to pay the tax at the time of Regis tration or obtaining fitness certificates in their respective tax circle or Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office. The tax paid against a vehicle will be adjusted with the income-tax returns submitted at year-end.
The revenue board has taken the move to minimise the hassle faced by tax payers as they have received a number of complaints from taxpayers on the complexities of payment of tax in the BRTA offices, said a senior tax official.
To resolve the problems, the board has decided to hold a meeting on Wednesday with the high-ups of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Post offices, he said.
Revenue board will propose introduction of a single window in BRTA offices where taxpayers can pay three kinds of taxes---road tax, fitness tax and income tax---which is mandatory for renewal or issuance of car registration certificate, he said.
"Car owners have to go to at least three different places for payment of taxes. The move came following their request to the authority for cutting short the procedures," he said.
NBR prefers opening a bank branch in the BRTA office to collect all kind taxes from car owners, he said.
