The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has formed a four-member committee to look into the issues that may have created confusion among the taxpayers regarding payment of income tax, sources said.
The committee comprises all income tax members.
The board has also opened 'help desk' at all revenue offices, tax zones and at the NBR premises to provide necessary information to the taxpayers on income tax, customs duty and value added tax (VAT).
Officials of tax, customs and VAT are now available at the help desk to assist the taxpayers and explain different issues to them.
Eight high officials of the board will spend one hour each at the help desk to give proper suggestions to the taxpayers.
The board has taken the step in order to encourage the taxpayers and ease the process of filling up of tax return forms.
"We have opened those 'help desk' to assist the taxpayers to fill up new tax return form without help of the tax lawyers," said NBR chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid.
This year, the government has introduced universal self-assessment system, which require some documents and assistance to fill up return form, he said adding, "Our main objective is to educate taxpayers on tax related matters."
Besides, the NBR has been receiving poor response from the individual taxpayers.
The time of filing individual taxpayers return will expire on November 30 next.
Until November 15, a total of 356,956 individual taxpayers filed tax returns for an estimated Tk 5.54 billion worth of income tax.
The board has received tax worth Tk 5.13 billion up to October 31, the previous deadline of submission of individuals' tax return.
When asked on the issue, the NBR chief said: "We are waiting for the last minute rush."
He expects a significant improvement in filing of the individuals' tax return ahead of November 30 deadline.
The NBR has collected tax revenue worth Tk 123.74 billion in the first four months posting a 21 per cent growth over the receipts during the corresponding period of the last fiscal.
