CHITTAGONG, Nov 30: Allegations have been brought up against a multinational cigarette manufacturing company for its alleged tax evasion by lowering the prices of products on the local market.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has issued a show cause notice upon the British American Tobacco Bangladesh Ltd alleging that the BATB has evaded huge amount of duty payable to the national exchequer through marketing the world standard Bristol brand cigarette at the lower slab.
Public Relations Department of the BATB however denied the allegations of tax evasion brought against them and said they would reply to the show cause notice as soon as possible.
Some local brand cigarettes manufacturers have brought the allegations with the proper government agency seeking investigation regarding the issue.
Following allegations Barrister Jahangir Hossain, Commissioner of Value Added Tax (VAT), issued a show cause notice upon managing director of the BATB to explain within 10 days why the price of Bristol cigarettes should not be revised, failing which the government would take its own course of action on the matter.
When contacted, Shamim Zahidi, PRO of the multinational company, said they would reply to the show cause notice very soon.
