NBR to honour 350 top taxpayers

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will honour a total of 350 top taxpayers across the country in 2008-09 fiscal under two categories- the highest and the longest term payers.
The NBR will honour 30 taxpayers from six city corporations and from 64 district towns, the revenue board has selected 320 taxpayers.
It has selected three highest taxpayers and two long-term taxpayers from each city corporation and district towns.
The NBR has issued a gazette Sunday with the list of names of the top taxpayers.
The NBR will honour the top taxpayers on the occasion of celebrating the National Income tax day-2009 on September 15 in the city.
Talking to the FE, former NBR chief Mohammad Abdul Mazid said: "Celebration of national income tax day will encourage people to pay tax."
It is necessary to cultivate income tax culture among the people, Mazid said who had first introduced the concept of celebrating National Income tax day in 2008.
Enforcement of law will be easier if the government could motivate taxpayers to pay income tax voluntarily, he said stressing the need for simplification of income tax law.
"The country is yet to form an income tax act. It is still following income tax ordinance which is not approved or discussed in the parliament," he said.
Income tax department will have to come out from the complexities of law to net more people, he added.
Three top taxpayers under Dhaka division are---Md. Anwar Hossain, Hazi Kaus Miah and Md. Iqbal Haider. Long-term taxpayers of Dhaka are---Syed Mahabub and AMS Mahmud.
Under Chittagong division, Nani Gopal Shaha, Jamal Uddin and Asit Kumar Shaha paid highest tax in 2008-09 fiscal. Long-term taxpayers in Chitagoing City Corporation are---Md. Abu Yousup and Md. Sadek Ullah.
In Rajshahi, highest taxpayers are---Md. Abul Hossain, Md. Shahjahan Ali and Omar Faruk. Long-term taxpayers are---Md. Syedul Islam and Md. Seikh Abdul Wali.
Setara Begum and Md. Selim are two long-term taxpayers in Khulna while Abdul Hamid Sarker, Seikh Daud Haider and Md. Kamrul Ahsan are the top taxpayers.
In Sylhet city corporation, Md. Jamil Iqbal, Chinmoy Kanti Das and Mahabubur Rahman are the top three taxpayers. Ajmol Hossain and Mokbul Ali are the long-term taxpayers in Sylhet.
